Survival, suspense, fear, love, death and a major plot twist are a few key themes that describe the brand new Young Adult novel, Feel Me Fall, by James Morris. Having read two of his previous books, including Melophobia and What Lies Within, he definitely succeeds at taking you on a crazy adventure where you can’t stop reading as you’ll want to find out what happens next. The first few chapters of Feel Me Fall are reminiscent of the classic book, Lord of the Flies, the TV show “LOST,” and even the Tom Hanks movie, Cast Away, where a plane crash in a remote area forces survivor(s) to fend for themselves away from modern day luxuries and civilization. One of the major differences is that Feel Me Fall is centered around high school students, where their teen issues collide with primal survival instincts.
Unlike Lord of the Flies, which was written in 1957, Feel Me Fall gives a glimpse of today’s world where parents and teens dabble in video games, things go viral on social media, peer pressure is evident, under-aged pregnancies occur, and teachers have flings with their students. It was refreshing to see how much research went into Feel Me Fall and it was as if we were watching episodes of the Discovery Channel’s, “Naked and Afraid,” where survivors are left starving, fighting off insects and eating disgusting things.
As you continue to make your way towards the latter half of the book, things will begin to get extremely dark. By this point, you will really connect with each of the characters because they’ve been so carefully crafted and illustrated like paintings on a canvas, except Morris is skillfully using written words. Perhaps it’s Morris’ background as a Hollywood scriptwriter that makes it easy for readers to envision scenes like a movie playing out on each page. As mentioned before and without spoiling what happens, a major plot twist will leave you shocked.
Without a doubt, Morris does a great job of showcasing characters that struggle with their morals, loyalty and trust, especially when put in live or die situations. Feel Me Fall, is gripping, highly recommended and one’d you expect to see on a television network like Freeform, home to young adult shows like, “Pretty Little Liars” and “Famous in Love.”
