Formed in the Bay Area in 2023, Cuva Bimö is what you get when a Craigslist ad actually works. The band came together after guitarist and vocalist Pete and drummer Ricky found themselves with a few song ideas and fewer people to play them. They turned to Craigslist, where the search produced at least one memorable audition involving a 30-pack of Bud Light and musicianship that deteriorated with every beer. Thankfully, that lineup didn’t make the cut. Keep reading and check out the full interview below.
Guitarist and vocalist Sebastian responded to the ad, heard the early demos and immediately brought his own ideas into the room. Bassist Jake soon followed after spotting what was essentially the same Craigslist post with the word “guitarist” swapped out for “bassist.”
Welcome to Post-Whatever Rock
During our interview, Cuva Bimö explained that they pulled from post-punk, shoegaze, grunge, noise rock, new wave, goth and Mexican punk without sounding like it is working through a checklist.
Their solution is simple: call it “post-whatever rock.”
The phrase fits a band whose influences include Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Gang of Four, Minutemen and Queens of the Stone Age. Those reference points are present, but Cuva Bimö is careful not to cosplay as any of them. Sebastian admitted that his love for Queens of the Stone Age occasionally becomes a creative hazard when a new idea starts sounding a little too familiar.
That self-awareness keeps the band’s sound unpredictable. Sharp, wiry guitar lines can give way to heavy noise, strange tunings and Latin punk energy. The members may arrive at a song from four different directions, yet somehow meet in the same beautifully chaotic place.
Every Band Needs a Vibe Checker
Sebastian and Pete usually begin the writing process with a demo or the basic skeleton of an idea. Once they bring it to the full band, all bets are off.
Ricky fills in the rhythmic spaces they do not naturally hear as guitarists. Jake, repeatedly described as Cuva Bimö’s “secret weapon,” has earned another unofficial title: vibe checker.
He is the person willing to suggest a different key, rearrange a section or replace a guitar part entirely. His recommendations are occasionally met with the musical equivalent of “fuck you, buddy,” immediately followed by the realization that he was right.
That process helped transform “800 Meter Tears,” a song that began uncomfortably close to Blur territory before the band dismantled it and rebuilt it into something distinctly their own.
Their latest album, New Western Values, also pushes the band into new territory. One Spanish-language song took shape after Pete spent a weekend watching Mexican punk bands and arrived at rehearsal ready to channel that energy. Another draws inspiration from the glorious emotional excess of telenovelas, complete with cinematic drama and hunky grown men crying.
From Drop D to Condemned Trailers
Cuva Bimö’s musical origin stories are refreshingly unglamorous. Sebastian started playing guitar at 13 because of Smashing Pumpkins, then spent months hiding in drop D tuning because everything else sounded terrible. Pete’s path ran through WWE entrance music, high school theater, Nirvana songs and, regrettably, playing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the ukulele.
Their earlier bands taught them how to fill every available second with noise. Cuva Bimö reflects what came after: better instincts, more restraint and enough maturity to occasionally listen when a sound engineer asks them to turn down.
Sebastian still remembers playing inside a condemned trailer scheduled for demolition. An exterior wall was ripped off, bands performed in the living room and everyone helped destroy what remained of the place.
“If we could play a condemned trailer again, I would so fucking do it,” he said.
That might be the clearest description of Cuva Bimö yet. They are more technical now, more collaborative and slightly better at protecting their hearing, but the urge to rip the wall off and make noise is still very much alive.
