Most guided tours tell you what’s behind the glass. Jessie Lee and Max Huber want to tell you what happened when nobody was thinking about a museum exhibit.
The pair are taking guests through the collection with stories drawn from their own years in punk’s orbit. Max, a former member of the Swingin’ Utters and a museum co-founder, brings a musician’s perspective. Jessie, an adult film star and longtime friend of Fat Mike who has been involved with the museum since its early days, brings her own friendships and firsthand memories into the mix.
“We’re kind of doing something that hasn’t been done in the museum,” Max told us. He described a tour built around the stories people associate with punk’s wilder side, told inside the museum after it closes. The setting matters: instead of weaving through other visitors, their group gets the space to itself.
That intimacy is part of the draw for Jessie. Regular guided tours can share the galleries with other museumgoers, she explained. After hours, “it’s just us.” Together, they plan to move through the exhibits and connect the artifacts to people and moments they actually know.
Jessie said some of her stories come from roughly a decade of friendship with Fat Mike. Max has his own collection from playing music and helping bring the museum to life. They teased stories that have stayed off social media, though neither gave away the best ones in our interview.
Their connection to the place runs deeper than a guest-guide appearance. Max remembered conversations during the pandemic about why punk didn’t have a museum dedicated to the culture as a whole. He and others brought people together to make that idea real. Three years after the museum opened, he said he still notices additions he hadn’t seen before.
The two also made clear that their tour will have a point of view. Ask them what a visitor shouldn’t miss and they’ll send you toward the bar. Ask Max what makes a guided visit special and he talks about hearing an artist’s personal take on the collection. Their after-hours version promises both perspectives, with considerably less pressure to keep the stories suitable for every passing visitor.
The tours arrive alongside the museum’s new Motörhead exhibition, which includes items from Lemmy Kilmister’s personal collection and an opportunity for visitors to play his bass. Jessie and Max’s first tour coincides with the exhibition’s opening festivities on October 2nd.
