Name/Position: Nicolas Bacon/Director
Film: Odette
This week’s profile is on Director Nicolas Bacon, whose film was selected by NewFilmmakers Los Angeles to be part of a screening at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. Get to know Bacon and his film:
Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you’ve been working on it.
The film was inspired by my grandmother Odette Barrois, who is also playing the title character. It is beautiful to see that at almost 87 years old, she enjoys each moment of her life as much as she can while others complain about totally unimportant things. This idea of a dysfunctional family immediately came up to me and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to make an “homage” her.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank for helping out with this film?
My actors, again and again, for their talent, their patience and their trust in me.
How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at Sunset Gower Studios?
It’s something I could not have imagined while shooting the film. Wonderful opportunity.
What inspires you?
Talented people inspire me. And movies… So I guess… Movies made by talented people.
Who are your influences and who do you admire?
David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson…
What lessons have you learned from the industry so far?
If the door is closed, use the window.
If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?
Steven Spielberg, why not?
What is the toughest experience you’ve ever had to overcome?
I’m only twenty years old. In about ten, I might be able to give a proper answer.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you?
Simply to never lose the determination that I have.
What advice would you give to new filmmakers starting out in the industry?
To keep making films, no matter how.
Where can we expect to see you next?
Feature film, I hope. I am currently in the middle of a writing process.
