Recap: E3 2011 at the Los Angeles Convention Center

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), is a 3-day long gamer’s paradise held annually in Los Angeles, CA. Picture your favorite publishers showcasing the latest and greatest franchises in the video game industry. Companies go head to head displaying the biggest, loudest and brightest booths to hype up games that have yet to be released. You’ve got live demos, gameplay, trailers, booth babes and press conferences. Anxious gamers wait patiently in long lines for hours all for a chance to try out highly anticipated, unreleased games including Battlefield 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, Ghost Recon, Mass Effect 3, Metro: LastLight, Dead Island, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, among plenty of others. There’s press conferences and presentations from Nintendo, Sony Playstation, Microsoft’s Xbox360 and countless others.

One of the biggest announcements to come out of E3 was the new PS Vita, a handheld gaming device. Check out the E3 trailer here:

Of course, Nintendo also announced the release of their own WiiU to complement the Wii console. Check out their E3 trailer here:

As a newbie to E3, the experience was overwhelming and loud, in a good way. The event drew over 45,000 gaming enthusiasts to the L.A. Convention Center this past week. Trailers played on huge screens and enthusiastic fans rushed from one booth to another with bags full of free swag. With my exhibitor’s pass in hand, I snapped photos as I walked around the Los Angeles Convention Center. Navigating through the massive crowds of game enthusiasts, I saw classic games from my childhood including Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Brothers and Zelda. I was as excited as a kid in a candy store.

We learned that motion controlled consoles are blowing up. Check out photos of demos below:

Booths at the event were massive, clearly a sign that companies were trying to outshine each other. Check out Activision’s 360 degree display for the upcoming game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3:

Of course rivals EA were also on deck displaying Battlefield 3, Madden, Fifa and Star Wars Old Republic. I’ve got to say, their graphics were amazing.

Check out a video from E3 brought to you by the Battlefield crew. Even rapper Xzibit made a cameo at the end.

It was interesting to find out that people with Activision badges were turned away at the Battlefield 3 booth. See the proof in Tweets:

Of course, I couldn’t leave without snapping a few photos with some of the characters at the event:

Majority of the time, I made my way from the South Hall to the West Hall at the convention center. I watched a ton of game trailers and felt timid to play the games out in the open since there was always an audience.
