Opening the gig for Willie Nelson was Asleep at The Wheel which consisted of Ray Benson – Lead and Vocals, Jason Roberts – Fiddle, Eddie Rivers – Steel Guitar and Sax, David Miller – Bass, David Sanger – Drums, Elizabeth McQueen – Guitar and Vocals, Floyd Domino – Piano.
This band’s sound was a mix of old school Jazz and blue grass that was sounding pretty good that night. It felt like some impromptu jazz jam with guitars, fiddles, and steel guitar with each taking a solo on the songs it was really cool to see people trade solos. Their technique was up to par as well, as these Boogie Woogie tunes would get pretty fast and the players were able to hold their own. Toward the end of their set they had Willie Nelson join them for a few tunes and it was pretty cool to see Willie Jamming on their tunes.
After Asleep at the Wheel was done it was time for Willie to take the stage with his band and it was awesome to see that he still rocks it. He basically played the whole night as a medley each song flowing directly into the next it was an awesome way of presenting his music.it was unexpected for someone who was brought up listening to contemporary music.
The show was about quality and there was this huge grand piano onstage instead of some digital keyboard it’s the details that make an amazing show and they were not cutting any corners.
Toward the middle of his set they stopped and did a blues number that his son sang and played guitar on. He was ripping on the guitar and had a really good tone to his voice. The good stuff must flow in the genes.
The whole night Willie was wearing this cowboy hat and towards the end of the night he threw it into the crowd and donned his red bandana and with Trigger in his hands started into “On the Road Again.”
At the end of the set his band began playing Christmas music while Willie took his bows and the audience cheered and applauded him.
All in all it was a great show – you can’t beat the classics.
