Business Spotlight: Interview with Brian Gross of BSG PR

We recently caught up with Brian Gross of BSG PR to discuss his business, how he started, what he’s learned as well as advice for others looking to start their own PR firms. BSG PR has had a number of clients under its belt including endorsements from Hustler, Sasha Grey, Penthouse, E! Online, and ABC News, to name a few. Keep reading to learn more about Brian Gross and his company.

How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After a couple meetings with other companies, and a couple PR Firms, it felt only natural to go on my own.  I had three different people approach me to handle their PR needs. January 1st, 2001, it became official that I would have my own company, BSG PR.
What motivates you and/or keeps you motivated?
My clients. They motivate me to do the best job I possibly can, for them.  They have entrusted me with this important aspect of their business. I want to make sure I live up to the potential.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Every day when an article, or a story is up, it makes me smile. If a day comes and that doesn’t happen, it’s time for me to move on…

What was the most difficult part in getting started?
Nothing was difficult. I continued my work ethic, and with it came more clients, and more opportunities.  It’s very easy to work 14-16 hours a day, even more, and never leave your home or office, when you are on your own, and especially when you begin. I got back into kickboxing, and other activities to make sure I was staying physically active. 

What’s the best piece of advice someone’s given you?
I had other publicists who are incredible mentors take me in and guide me through the beginnings of starting my business.. They opened their doors and taught me everything I could have ever imagined that would help me. To this day, their kindness, advice, and knowledge I pass down to others, when given the opportunity.

What are your goals and what lessons have you learned so far?
My goals are continued growth and success for my clients.  Every day I learn something new, whether it is about the media, the people in my life, the people I work with…  Constant growth, knowledge, and understanding.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice for the future, what would you say? 

Chill out a little more.  Things are going to get better with age.

I agree. This is life, you need to go for it, whatever “it” is and what it means to you.

I like people who belittle, or question you. That drives you to prove them wrong.

Fear is the greatest challenge to out run.

What advice would you give to college students who want to go into PR?
Learn as much as you can, and intern, immediately. You need to intern, to see the ladder you will need to climb, to get where you want to go.
