Deftones, Love at First Listen

Drenched in the communal sweat, I light up a cigarette as we explode onto Sunset Boulevard.  A sold-out crowd exits the Palladium as Deftones wrap-up another set.  It’s the night before Thanksgiving and we are all thankful for what we just experienced.  Still feeding off the adrenaline we disperse into the illuminating traffic with the memory of an unforgettable night.

Deftones just released their seventh album titled, Koi No Yokan earlier this month.  The album is a beautiful representation of the bands ability to balance the hypnotic serenade with a brutal howl of emotion.  It hits the ground running with the opening track Swerve City and travels to a seductive state when it reaches Graphic Nature.

The record is produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters) who they first collaborated with on their last album Diamond Eyes, released in 2010.  It is also the second time recording with new bassist Sergio Vega.  A long-time friend of the band, Vega replaces Deftones original bass player Chi Cheng, who was severely injured in a car accident in November of 2008.

Since the release of their first album in ’95, Deftones have evolved their style into a sound that is their own.  Their music doesn’t fall into category but perhaps could be best described as metal covered with an impeccable patina.  The right amount of decay that turns beauty into perfection, assuring you that what you are hearing is real.
