Every year, thousands rush to stores to buy flowers, chocolates, jewelry and stuffed animals for their significant others in celebration of Valentine’s Day. However, for those suffering a break-up, death or divorce, Valentine’s Day can be an emotional train wreck triggering feelings of sadness, loneliness and abandonment. Some even refer to the holiday as Single’s Awareness Day and despise the commercialism of the holiday. Luckily, if you’re a Valentine’s Day hater, Disarray Magazine can help you celebrate or commiserate.

In fact, you’re not alone. A simple search on Facebook yields numerous “Anti-Valentine’s Day” fan pages and groups with hundreds of members.

Staying home?

Invite a few friends over and watch:

Requiem for a Dream (2000) Drugs rule everything around the characters in this film. A boyfriend/girlfriend combined with drugs makes for a very uncomfortable ending.

Rules of Attraction (2002) This movie is full of relationship drama, stalkers and creepy crushes. Keep your eyes peeled for the bathtub scene.

What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) Watching Ike and Tina’s relationship crumble is enough to make you glad you’re alone on Valentine’s Day.

La Bamba (1987) Even in the old days, relationships were full of drama, disappointment and a lot of hoop jumping. Best scene: Bob Morales and his pregnant wife battle it out as Morales comes home belligerent and sweaty.

Going out?

Here’s what you can do in any city:

  • Attend a party for singles and Valentine’s Day haters.
  • Put together an Anti-Valentine’s Day pub crawl.

  1. I hate Valentine's Day! It's a sappy holiday where everyone is pressured to buy shit, just like Christmas. LAME! I'm not even single and I hate it!!

  2. My girlfriend and I just broke up. I'm going to go out with friends and maybe we'll watch one of the movies listed in this article.
